Instead of filtering syscalls to the host kernel, gVisor interposes a completely separate kernel implementation called the Sentry between the untrusted code and the host. The Sentry does not access the host filesystem directly; instead, a separate process called the Gofer handles file operations on the Sentry’s behalf, communicating over a restricted protocol. As part of their research, they have put together a set of proposed improvements for Node.js' Web streams implementation that will eliminate promises in certain code paths which can yield a significant performance boost up to 10x faster, which only goes to prove the point: promises, while useful, add significant overhead.
