But for clear-air turbulence pilots still rely on reports from other pilots who have already passed through it—an unsatisfactory arrangement for both parties. “A pilot is an analog, qualitative sensor,” Cornman said. “They get bounced around and say, ‘It’s moderate turbulence.’ Well, what does that mean?” A bone-rattling drop on a small plane might feel like a bump or two on a jumbo jet. Or a pilot might be too busy trying to control the plane to comment on the weather at all. “By the time they make the report, it’s happened way back there,” Cornman said. “So the locations aren’t very accurate, either.”
